The bells, the bells!!!

You may well have heard the bells of St Saviour’s ringing out on 13th November. This was to mark the Licensing of Father Steven as the new Priest and was the first time all the bells had been rung in several years!
Before ringing the bells, extensive cleaning had to take place. Unfortunately, a large number of pigeons had made the bell tower their home! A team of volunteers and expert bell ringers worked very hard to get the pigeons out and to clean up all the mess left behind. A steeplejack has now sealed the gaps and the pigeons have found new homes!
Bell ringing symbolises the call to prayer and bells are normally rung sometime before a service. We are very fortunate at St Saviour’s to have a peal of eight bells. The bells themselves were cast in 1874 by John Warner and Sons. The lightest bell is 29 inches in diameter and the heaviest 46 inches! We are very fortunate to have 8 historic bells here at St Saviour’s.

If you have any views on the bells ringing or would like to learn to ring, please let us know.
